Bratislava, 13 May 2025 – The Slovak Institute of Metrology (SMÚ), in cooperation with the Slovak Office of Standards, Metrology and Testing (ÚNMS SR), marked a key milestone this year – the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention.

On this occasion, SMÚ hosted a science outreach event titled the World Metrology Day at its headquarters on Karloveská Street in Bratislava. The event was dedicated primarily to students from Bratislava-based secondary schools, with the aim of raising awareness among young people about the relevance of metrology, the science of measurement, and its fundamental role in both everyday life and industrial applications.

The programme featured expert-led presentations on the International System of Units (SI), an overview of the historical development of metrology, and guided visits to SMÚ’s specialized laboratories. Through this initiative, SMÚ also promoted the importance of pursuing university-level studies in technical fields with a focus on metrology.

The strong engagement and interest demonstrated by the students reaffirms that scientific disciplines can resonate with younger generations, particularly when presented in an interactive and experiential format.

SMÚ extends its sincere thanks to the School for Exceptionally Gifted Children and the Grammar School on Teplická Street, as well as the Secondary Industrial School of Mechanical Engineering on Fajnorovo nábrežie (Embankment) in Bratislava, including their dedicated teachers and students, for their active participation and genuine interest in the field of metrology.

TV JOJ broadcasted a report about the event in its news program, which you can watch at LINK.
