The European Partnership on Metrology (EPM) is an institutionalised partnership established by a Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council and implemented by the European Association of National Metrology Institutes (EURAMET). It is co-funded by the European Union and the Participating States and is implemented under the Horizon Europe framework. The EPM builds on the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) and its predecessor, the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP). The objective of the EPM is to strengthen Europe’s global leadership in metrology research by establishing sustainable European metrology networks. It aims to foster the development of innovative solutions addressing key societal challenges, including health, the environment and climate change, while supporting the development and implementation of relevant regulations and standards.

Within the EPM framework, the Slovak Republic has been allocated EUR 1.5 million, with national co-financing required at the same level. EPM projects are carried out through multinational consortia, thereby ensuring the international character of the research collaboration. To date, European co-funding allocated to projects involving the Slovak Institute of Metrology (SMÚ) totals EUR 826,000, excluding new projects set to start in 2026.
SMÚ has participated, or is currently participating, in the following EPM projects:

2022
  • Metrology for multi-level soil moisture monitoring (completed project)
2023
  • Improved realisation of the kelvin using fixed points for non-contact thermometry
2024
  • Ensuring European traceability of medical measuring devices through optical absorption liquid filters
  • Radon metrology: sensor networks for large buildings and future cities
  • SI-traceable thermometry for industrial applications
  • Metrological traceability of hydrogen flow measurement in gas grids
2025
  • Enhancing metrological capabilities in air temperature measurement (SMÚ as consortium coordinator)
  • Metrology for reliable analysis of electrical grid data
2026  (consortium agreements to be signed in 2026)
  • Advanced digital infrastructure for harmonised metrology in thermometry
  • Supporting the uptake of new technologies in the dissemination of thermodynamic temperature
  • Metrology for gas analysers
The final year for submitting applications to join EPM project consortia is 2027, with project implementation expected no later than 2030. Further details are available on the EPM website: https://www.metpart.eu/. The 2026 calls for proposals focus on industry, fundamental metrology, research potential, and metrological solutions supporting standardisation and regulation. SMÚ seeks to strengthen its research and development activities and expand cooperation not only with other national metrology institutes but also with universities, research organisations, and industrial partners. It should be noted that, to date, the participation of Slovak entities other than SMÚ in EPM projects has been very limited. Considering the above, SMÚ hereby invites Slovak research and scientific organisations to consider joining EPM project consortia and offers potential partners the opportunity to collaborate with SMÚ on EPM projects.
